Borderlands 2

Pandora, a desolate planet littered with the detritus of industry and alien technology, a prime place for a Vault Hunter to make a fortune… you’ll just have to survive bandits, mutants, beasts and an ego-maniacal corporate dictator first! Good: This game has a surreal setting, bringing a strange mixture of the silly and serious that’s tied together by over the top violence. Funnily enough, I actually rather enjoyed the main story thanks to it’s twists and turns, and the characters you meet along the way cut a good balance between bombastic and realistic. This overall style is enhanced by the … Continue reading Borderlands 2

The Elder Scrolls Online (& Morrowind Expansion)

Like the Elder Scrolls setting, but wish you could play it with friends? This buy-to-play title might be what you’re looking for – without breaking the bank. Good: The first (and arguably most important) thing to talk about is the general gameplay. Unlike most MMO titles, you can actively block or interrupt attacks and spells without the need for a special ability – and getting the hang of doing so will vastly improve your performance. It lends combat a much more involved feel that rewards you for tactical thinking, a distinct plus in my opinion. Creating a character involves picking … Continue reading The Elder Scrolls Online (& Morrowind Expansion)

Beginner Weapons

There’s a lot of weapons available in this game, with little in the way of explanation. While trying them out and deciding what you like is an option, these are my recommendations for weapons to aim towards while you find your feet. Note: Almost all of these can be bought straight from the market. Primary: Your main ranged weapon, there are a huge number of options available, from high tech bows to flamethrowers and laser carbines. There’s almost guaranteed to be something that suits you. Bows: With a small ammo pool, slow fire rate and a flight time, these can … Continue reading Beginner Weapons

ARK: Survival Evolved

Stranded on a dinosaur-infested desert island with little knowledge of what happened, ARK blends traditional sandbox-survival game-play with tracking and taming powerful pets. Good: There is a lot to be said for a sandbox game that really focuses on pets – I mean, who doesn’t like the idea of having a pet dinosaur, let alone a ton of them. ARK lets you maintain a large group of them, bowling over enemies en mass or just zipping around the land, sky or sea using a craftable saddle. Each creature has it’s own diet and abilities, from the hopping giant frogs to … Continue reading ARK: Survival Evolved

Guide: Ground Combat

The officers and equipment you select define how effective you’ll be on the ground in Star Trek Online. Read on for a look at the capabilities of each type of officer, or skip to the end for a cheap set-up that should be able to handle most situations. Group Composition: An away team is typically made up of your captain plus four officers you pick from your bridge crew. It’s fairly important to have a mixture of specialisations to help deal with a variety of foes, since each brings a different set of powers. Species & Traits: Every bridge officer … Continue reading Guide: Ground Combat

Wukong

Overview: Wukong is based on the deity of the same name, able to duplicate himself, ride a cloud or simply hand out beatings with his iron staff. Research and build him in the Tenno lab of your clan dojo if you want to get up to some monkey business. Special: Three times per mission, Wukong can cheat death by becoming invulnerable for 2 seconds, restoring 50% of his health and gaining a random buff for a brief period: Primal Forces: 300% elemental damage for 60 seconds Heavenly Cloak: Invisibility for 30 seconds Cosmic Armour: Invulnerability for 30 seconds Monkey Luck: … Continue reading Wukong

Giant Bugs?

Giant insects are a staple of games, books and media in general – and indeed, they existed in the distant past. Why then, do they not exist today? Oxygen: The level of oxygen present in the atmosphere of Earth hasn’t always been the same. Back in the Paleozoic era (dinosaurs) there was a lot more oxygen present in the air – probably due to the massive amounts of photosynthesis occurring at the time. Pretty much all complex life-forms require oxygen to respire (or turn sugars into energy to fuel ourselves) and insects are no different. Insect Lungs: Insects posses a … Continue reading Giant Bugs?

Return from Extinction?

Ever wondered if we could bring back the dinosaurs using recovered DNA? Let’s have a look at some of the science involved: DNA: DNA can be found in almost all currently-known lifeforms (certain viruses possess no DNA, using RNA instead) and acts as a sort of cookbook for our bodies, determining things like height, skin and eye colour, bone density and so on. DNA is inherited from your forebears – using the cookbook analogy, imagine that each parent copied half of the recipes from their book into yours. Half-Life: DNA is a complex chain of molecules, and thus will slowly … Continue reading Return from Extinction?

Fantasy Ecosystems?

Every fantasy game or story needs an ecosystem – the plants and animals that compose all life in an area. Primary Producers: At the start of every viable ecosystem, you’ll find producers – organisms that take energy from an abiotic (something that’s never been alive) source and convert it into material. The most common example for us would be plants, absorbing sunlight and using photosynthesis to produce sugar – but other examples exist, such as the bacteria living near volcanic vents on the ocean floor that convert the chemicals and heat spewed out. Without these, we wouldn’t have any form … Continue reading Fantasy Ecosystems?

Star Wars: The Old Republic

An MMO set in a galaxy far, far away and boasting a much larger focus on storytelling than other offerings of it’s type. The core game is free to play, while you’ll have to subscribe to unlock the expansion content. Good: There is a huge amount of content, with the eight different classes having their own storyline – and it’s not like most MMO titles that give you a couple of class-specific quests, the individual storyline for each class could serve as a standalone game. Each plot is pretty solid as well, with options to follow a light or dark … Continue reading Star Wars: The Old Republic
