Limbo

Hope there’s not a dead rabbit in there.

Overview: Channelling the power of the rift to disable foes and protect allies, you can obtain this dimension-hopping trickster during The Limbo Theorem quest available from your codex.

Prime: Limbo prime can be found on vaulted relics, meaning that you’ll need to wait for a prime resurgence event or ask clanmates if they have his relics if you want to obtain this variant.

Special: Limbo can enter the rift plane (as opposed to the material plane) by dodging, leaving behind a portal that allies can also enter. Being in the rift has a number of effects:

  • Cannot hit enemies outside the rift plane and vice-versa (frame powers still work!)
  • Enemies entering or leaving the rift plane will take 300 impact damage
  • Allies can dodge to leave the rift plane
  • Allies regenerate 2 energy per second
  • Limbo regenerates 10 energy when killing an enemy in the rift plane

Pros: Energy regeneration for self and allies, can be great for protecting mobile defence objectives, unique rift mechanic.

Cons: Poor innate defences – must rely on powers and the rift to survive. Can be a huge detriment to squads when played thoughtlessly, getting in the way of gun-play. Be prepared to altar your tactics to suit your squad – communication is key!

Powers: Banish (1) emits a small cone of energy, forcing allies and enemies out of the plane Limbo is currently in (so a Limbo in the rift plane will send all affected to the material plane) and causing enemies to take a small amount of impact damage. The Rift Haven augment will also cause Banished (1) allies to regenerate 25% of their health. This can be a massive irritation, but can also be really good if an ally is using a lot of frame powers to deal damage!

Stasis (2) freezes all enemies and enemy gunfire in the rift plane for 15 seconds, resuming action/flight on expiration or upon holding 300 individual projectiles. Cast it during Cataclysm (4) or before switching into the rift plane to protect yourself from Banished (1) foes.

Rift Surge (3) charges nearby enemies in the rift plane with energy, causing them to banish other nearby foes when they exit the rift – good in combination with Cataclysm (4) to drag enemies who escape back in. The Rift Torrent augment will increase Limbo’s damage while in the rift plane by 30% for every enemy affected by this ability.

Cataclysm (4) combines the material and rift planes in a shrinking sphere, dealing blast damage on creation and collapse – you can detonate the effect early by casting again. All allies and enemies in the sphere count as in the rift plane. The Cataclysmic Continuum augment will increase the duration of this ability for every enemy killed in the sphere.

Opinion: Limbo is an odd one, being fragile but able to bring a significant amount of power to the battlefield. Tuning the size of your Cataclysm (4) with range mods can make you a very good choice for protecting a defence objective, while using Banish (1) on a rescue target can help keep them alive. Conversely, a Limbo that spams Cataclysm (4) and Banishes (1) allies and enemies without thinking will be extremely detrimental to a squad – it is not unusual for players to quit a squad when a Limbo joins rather than give them a chance, so be prepared for that.
