Overview: Bowl enemies over, plate yourself in iron, boost squad damage with your roars and stomp the ground so hard you slow time – if this sounds good to you, try out Rhino. You can get Rhino components by killing the Jackal on Venus, and the main blueprint from the marketplace.
Prime: Rhino prime does exist, but the relics containing his parts are currently “vaulted” and will not drop from any source. Try asking friends and clanmates if they have any relics, keep an eye on the trading channel or wait for an “unvaulting” event if you want this Orokin powerhouse.
Special: Falling a significant distance will trigger a shock-wave on landing. A weak passive for an otherwise powerful frame.
Pros: Good innate defence, superb durability from iron skin, solid crowd control in a large radius and a hefty damage bonus to nearby squad-mates.
Cons: Sluggish movement, somewhat dull visual design, can be a bit energy hungry.
Powers: Crash into packs of enemies with Rhino Charge (1) dealing damage and ragdolling enemies as you dash forwards. Recasting this power within a short period will increase the damage and reduce the cost, and you can try out the Ironclad Charge augment to gain a bonus to your armour based on the number of targets hit.
Iron Skin (2) coats Rhino in metal, absorbing both damage, knockdowns and status effects. The amount of damage that this ability can absorb is based on power strength, armour and any damage absorbed in an initial 3 second period of invulnerability after casting. Adding in the Iron Shrapnel augment will allow you to detonate Iron Skin (2) by recasting it, dealing puncture damage all around you. Consider using Rhino Charge (1) with the Ironclad Charge augment to massively boost your armour prior to casting Iron Skin (2) for extreme durability. This can also be a useful quality of life augment, as it will allow you to recast Iron Skin (2) when you want to, rather than waiting for it to wear off naturally.
Roar (3) to buff yourself and nearby allies with a big (50% before adding your power strength) damage bonus that applies to both weapons and powers – it’s simple, but incredibly effective. The Piercing Roar augment will also knockdown nearby foes and inflict puncture status effects. This ability can be used to boost the power of things like the Acid Shells mod for the Sobek, dealing incredible area effect damage that scales with enemy health.
Rhino Stomp (4) to send enemies flying into the air in a huge radius, dealing blast damage and suspending them for a brief duration – a decent emergency crowd-control power that can also kill weaker foes outright. The Reinforcing Stomp augment will repair your Iron Skin (2) a small amount for each enemy caught in the blast.
Build: Rhino’s big party trick is Iron Skin (2) which scales off your armour and ability strength. If you can afford it, the Umbral mod set will give you a huge temporary health pool. If you use the Ironclad Charge augment to strike multiple targets with Rhino Charge (1) you’ll gain a further bonus to armour that’s multiplied by your ability strength, meaning that Iron Skin (2) can “double dip” from ability strength.
In addition to boosting your survivability via Iron Skin (2) ability strength can help you boost the power of your Roar (3) and thus that damage you and all nearby squad-mates deal. Since it’s a costly ability to use, I wouldn’t recommend reducing your ability duration below the default.
Finally, I would keep the range of your abilities at or above standard. Rhino Stomp (4) Has a surprisingly large range by default (25m when fully levelled) meaning it can affect a lot of enemies at once without modding – it would be a shame to throw away a powerful instant crowd-control effect like that by going into negative range. All in all though, it’s hard to really build “wrong” as Rhino as long as you increase your ability strength!
Opinion: A great pick, useful in any situation that doesn’t require stealth (and good for a smash and grab approach to those that do) Rhino is a must-have early on, especially due to the ease with which he can be acquired. One note of caution though, do not let yourself get into the habit of relying on Iron Skin (2) as this will get you killed in any other frame.
Rhino is easy to acquire, and blends survivability, crowd-control and squad support in one bulky package. He can make himself useful in almost any situation, with stealth being his only downside – that said, by applying Iron Skin (2) and sprinting to a hacking objective, he can be a fast way of completing spy vaults once you know what you are doing. One note of caution though, do not let yourself get used to the invulnerability of Iron Skin (2) as this will get you killed when you play any other frame.
