Chances are you’ve obtained some transmutation crystals in your adventures, and are wondering what to do with them. By using the crystals in a transmutation station, you can change the trait on a piece of equipment, or even reconstruct something you have previously collected and got rid of!
Station: Transmutations stations are pretty rare, and the only place they exist by default in game is the Clockwork City, requiring the DLC of the same name. However, anyone completing master crafting writs (you’ll need the highest rank in a craft to do this) will obtain writ vouchers – gather enough of these can you can buy your own transmutation station! Player guilds often have a transmutation station in their guild hall as well!
Crystals: To fuel the transmutation system, you’ll have to obtain some transmutation crystals – fortunately, there’s a method to do this for almost every kind of player:
- Battlegrounds: Reward bags can contain crystals
- Cyrodiil: The periodic and campaign rewards can contain crystals
- Random Dungeon: Group-finder random dungeons will grant you crystals once per day
- Veteran Dungeons/Trials: Defeating bosses can grant crystals.
- Undaunted Pledges: The rewards for a pledge include crystals
Functions: The transmutation can modify or reconstruct gear, but if you want an item to have a trait, you must have previously researched it at a crafting station.
- Change a trait: Pay 50 crystals to change the trait on an item into another!
- Reconstruct an item: Pay a variable amount of crystals to produce an item of your level with the trait of your choice from your collection. The cost of reconstruction goes down with each item collected, and deconstructing a reconstructed item will return 25 crystals!

Sets: Items in a set provide a cumulative bonus from every additional piece worn, usually culminating in a powerful special effect or large stat bonus bonus. There’s several ways to get item
- Crafted: Created by players at specific work benches, this is the only type of equipment that can’t be added to a collection. You can still change the trait on it though.
- Dungeon: Every dungeon has a light, medium and heavy armour set for you to collect!
- Monster: The final boss of any dungeon in veteran mode will drop a monster mask themed to the dungeon – you can obtain shoulder armour to complete the 2-piece bonus from the Undaunted guild. Alternatively, a rare vendor (The Golden) shows up in Cyrodiil every weekend offering a random selection of items including things from monster sets!
- Overland: World bosses, treasure chests, public dungeons, dolmens and more can all drop items from a light, medium or heavy set unique to that zone. These can also be sold at a guild trader, so keep an eye out for bargains!
- PvP: Reward bags after successfully completing a battleground or fighting in Cyrodiil can contain set items, and PvP vendors (found in Cyrodiil or near the Battlemaster) can offer random items in exchange for the alliance points rewarded for PvP.
Equipment that forms part of a set can be added (right click – bind) to your collection, an account-wide library of found items. Set items can be reconstructed at a transmutation station for a sum of crystals, with the cost going down (minimum 25) for every item in the set you’ve collected. Note that crafted equipment cannot be collected, but two-piece monster sets can!
