Worms: Armageddon

A classic game blending turn based combat with tactics and aiming skill. Control a customisation team of worms against the computer or a friend as you battle for supremacy with some of the strangest weapons known to worm-kind.

Good: This is a quick and endearing game with a surprising amount of skill – you’ll have to juggle the terrain, tactics available weapons, wind direction and the physics engine to succeed. Worms can be knocked flying by attacks, grenades fly in a ballistic arc then scatter from the terrain they land on, and ending up in the water drowns a worm – something you can use tactically since the terrain is fully destructible.

There is a large variety of very surreal weaponry on offer – as well as the usual shotguns, bazookas, grenades and martial arts, expect explosive sheep and bananas, a fragmentation Ming vase, and a nuclear test – so there’ always something interesting to do. You can also customise your team, naming each worm and choosing a sound pack, which is fun.

Bad: The control scheme is, for me at least, very unintuitive. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve tried to jump and blown myself up, which is a bit embarrassing. You are also at the mercy of RNG in terms of where your worms start during a match, which can lead to a big disadvantage form early casualties.

Opinion: It’s a fun game that you can pick up cheaply on Steam during a sale, and the unusual combination of turn-based skill-shooter makes it worth a punt.
