SLA Industries – 2nd Edition

Rain drips through streets above you, carrying pollutants from the upper level on their journey to the very depths of Mort City. A pile of steaming viscera tells you the killer is close, something confirmed as you check for movement on your TRACK OPTICS motion scanner. A discrete button shoots a dose of SLA Industries pharmaceuticals into your bloodstream, as you engage the power pack on your DPB vibro-sabre. Checking the camera is following, you swing into the alley to dispense the SLA‘s justice for the watching, bloodthirsty masses. Just another day in the World of Progress. SLA is best … Continue reading SLA Industries – 2nd Edition

Neverwinter

A massive MMORPG, Neverwinter is set in and around the the titular city, from the “Forgotten Realms” Dungeons & Dragons setting. Fight monsters, foil evil plots and visit strange locations in this free-to-play offering. Good: Neverwinter boasts a huge amount of content, and it’s all free. Unlike many f2p games, weapons, classes and equipment are not locked behind any paywall, and you should be capable of completing any quest that takes your fancy without spending any real-life money. Eight classes are available for you to choose from, and each comes with two paragon paths that allow you to further customise … Continue reading Neverwinter

Kenshi

Feudal Japan meets Mad Max featuring special guests the East India Trading Company, robots and the inquisition, all set in the sand blasted ruins of a once technologically advanced world. Encounter humans, hivers (insectoid mutants) and shek (genetically modified fighters who seek death in battle) along with the robots known as skeletons, who definitely didn’t have anything to do with the current dark age. Good: Kenshi is an extremely flexible sandbox, allowing you to play as a samurai, trader, bandit, bounty hunter, archaeologist-salvager, wandering ninja, slaver, slave, skin-stealing robot, bug-man drug-lord, xenophobic zealot and more. You can forge alliances, make … Continue reading Kenshi

Destiny 2

A sci-fi shooter that adds pseudo-mystical powers to the mix, you can play the base game for free on Steam with a premium charged for expansions. Good: The obvious thing to start with are the classes. Titan acts as a heavy duty close range brawler with an elemental theme, Hunter is an agile assassin and Warlock provides a mixture of showy support and damage spells. Each class also has it’s own sub-classes (a Warlock could choose to be a life-draining Voidwalker, arc-throwing Stormcaller or the flame-wielding Dawnblade) allowing you to customise your play-style. Finally, each class has their own movement … Continue reading Destiny 2

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

In a time of great innovation, step into the shoes of Adam Jensen, security consultant at Sarif Industries, leaders in the controversial field of human augmentation… Good: The general plot of this game is pretty good, capturing the feel of scheming mega-corps and cabals trading humanity for coin and power. Secret societies, plot twists, human greed and fear in the face of advancing technology… it’s a heady mix. Furthermore, the sound design and visuals do a good job of giving the impression you’re in a sci-fi movie, and they really add to the experience. In terms of actual gameplay, I … Continue reading Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Borderlands 2

Pandora, a desolate planet littered with the detritus of industry and alien technology, a prime place for a Vault Hunter to make a fortune… you’ll just have to survive bandits, mutants, beasts and an ego-maniacal corporate dictator first! Good: This game has a surreal setting, bringing a strange mixture of the silly and serious that’s tied together by over the top violence. Funnily enough, I actually rather enjoyed the main story thanks to it’s twists and turns, and the characters you meet along the way cut a good balance between bombastic and realistic. This overall style is enhanced by the … Continue reading Borderlands 2

Star Wars: The Old Republic

An MMO set in a galaxy far, far away and boasting a much larger focus on storytelling than other offerings of it’s type. The core game is free to play, while you’ll have to subscribe to unlock the expansion content. Good: There is a huge amount of content, with the eight different classes having their own storyline – and it’s not like most MMO titles that give you a couple of class-specific quests, the individual storyline for each class could serve as a standalone game. Each plot is pretty solid as well, with options to follow a light or dark … Continue reading Star Wars: The Old Republic

BioShock

When your plane goes down above the Atlantic Ocean, you take refuge in a mysterious lighthouse leading into the submerged city of Rapture – but is everything what it seems? Good: This is one of the most atmospheric games I’ve ever played, and has some stunning set-pieces. Old-time music drifts through the radio as you work your way through the damaged hallways of Rapture, an underwater city founded on Objectivism – the pursuit of self interest above all things. The faded glamour of the setting contrasts stunningly with the degenerate splicers, the maddened and genetically modified populace who seek only … Continue reading BioShock

Review: Fallout 3

Fallout 3 lets you wander the post-apocalyptic wastelands of America. Play hero or villain, scientist or savage – the choice is really up to you. Good: The first thing I noticed about Fallout 3 was just how much terrain there was to explore. Even discounting the additional areas added by the DLC included in the GOTY edition, the map is absolutely massive you could spend a huge amount of time just exploring, scrabbling through the wreckage of civilisation for ammo, drugs and food. Of course, there are plenty of stories to discover if you take this approach, even ones that … Continue reading Review: Fallout 3

Review: Fallout – New Vegas

If you’ve never played a Fallout game before, you might be rather taken aback at the mixture of tragedy, dark humour and absurdity laced throughout this series. Set in a sixties vision of the future and seasoned with nuclear war, New Vegas explores the efforts of an insane tycoon trying to keep alive his vision of Los Vegas in the irradiated Mojave desert. Face off against raiders, mutants, cannibals, sinister secret societies and even a madman’s version of the roman legions – or potentially join them… Highs: With a solid cowboy theme, New Vegas can inspire some pretty neat ideas … Continue reading Review: Fallout – New Vegas
